SIXTEENS – Fendi (MCD 2004)

(Hungry Eye Records www.hungryeyerecords.com )

The SIXTEENS are a US-based band from San Francisco and they are friends with The Vanishing and The Phantom Limbs. They actually have an own LP and a Split 12“ with The Vanishing out and now present their latest work on Hungry Eye Records. I don´t like too much to write, what label´s info-sheets say, but in this case, it contains some really true statements. There is „Post-Punk“ mentioned and bands like TuxedoMoon and Suicide and the legendary Screamers and Ireland´s Virgin Prunes. Fine collection of influences, I think. I would also add Nervous Gender/Beelzebub Youth and you can get a good impression, what you can exspect from the SIXTEENS. This is some kind of Synth-Punk with a heavy early New Wave feeling and some Gothic-/Death-Rock influences. Think of a darker version of the Epoxies, only with male vocals. This all sounds great, doensn´t it? And yes, the SIXTEENS are really a fantastic band and I absolutely would like to see them perform live in the future. If you like, what you read here and if you like the beautiful sounds of 80s Casio keyboards, you are definetly right here. (A.P.)
