LEGENDARY PINK DOTS – Synesthesia (CD 2002)

The LEGENDARY PINK DOTS are around since 20 years now and I really don´t now, how many official, inofficial, Live, Bootleg, Compilation etc. records, tapes and CDs have been released. Since 1988 I am in love with the band, when I first listened to their great album „Any Day Now“, but I neither know all their releases, nor own many of them. It is more like a special love, they come and go and come back again. In 2002 the LEGENDARY PINK DOTS release „Synethesia“ on the italian SPKR label and mastermind Edward Ka-Spel describes the album as „Companion to >Chemical  Playschool Volumes 11, 12 and 13<“. Well, I don´t know this stuff, but if it is as captivating as „Synesthesia“, it must be great. Of course, the sound of the LEGENDARY PINK DOTS is still the same as on many older records, but does any fan really want big changes? This time it is more experimental, but of course with some Wave influences and not too many Krautrock moments. Over all lies the fascinating and uncomparable voice of Edward Ka-Spel. This album will satisfy all fans surely, but I guess, it will not lead too many new fans to the band. What else to say than: brilliant as always? It is good to see and hear, that there are bands outside, which are not interested in actual hypes. (A.P.)

LEGENDARY PINK DOTS – Any Day Now (LP/CD 1988)

Meine erste Berührung mit den surrealistischen Klangwelten der LEGENDARY PINK DOTS hatte ich 1988 dank Sandra S. und dem zu jenem Zeitpunkt aktuellen Album „Any Day Now“, das ich bis heute für das Beste der Band halte, vielleicht auch aus nostalgischen Gründen. Ich weiß nicht mehr genau, ob der erste Song, den ich gehört habe „Casting The Runes“ oder „Waiting For The Cloud“ war, auf jeden Fall wurde damals eine bis heute anhaltende Liebe begründet (zu den LEGENDARY PINK DOTS, nicht zu Sandra S., der ich allerdings viel verdanke). Gleich der erste Song „Casting The Runes“ ist ein Hammer, der jeden Waver (früher nannten wir selber, aber auch die Medien und die Öffentlichkeit uns so) umhauen dürfte. Eine leicht nihilistische Stimmung trifft auf elegische Atmosphäre und die hypnotisierende Textzeile „That´s the way it will be, ´till the end of time“. Vor allem ungewöhnliche Rhythmen und das geniale Geigenspiel machen die Stimmung der Platte aus, die natürlich immer von Edward Ka-Spel´s Gesang geprägt wird. Leichte Psychedelic-Einflüsse verbinden sich mit Klängen, die man sich auf Vernissagen vorstellen könnte, dazu verarbeiteten die LEGENDARY PINK DOTS damals noch eine gehörige Portion Wave und erschufen auch den einen oder anderen tanzflächenkompatiblen Hit. Vor allem Live konnte die Gruppe damals absolut überzeugen und die nicht gerade kleine „Große Freiheit 36“ in Hamburg füllen. Neben „Casting The Runes“ begeistern vor allem Stücke wie „Neon Mariners“, „True Love“ und das epische „Waiting For The Cloud“ (incl. der Fortführung in „Cloud Zero“). Die CD-Version enthält zusätzlich alle drei Titel der „Under Glass“ 12“, wobei der Titelsong zumindest Ende der 80er Jahre in vielen Undergroundclubs gespielt wurde und die Tanzflächen füllte. Keine Frage, die LEGENDARY PINK DOTS haben in nunmehr rund 20 Jahren viele gute und einige geniale Alben geschaffen, „Any Day Now“ gehört für mich zu den allerbesten. (A.P.)
