THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS – Alien Road (CD 2004)

(Strobelight Records/Indigo)

What a surprise! Just reviewed the latest LAST DAYS OF JESUS MCD „Guns´n´Drums´n´March´n´Fun“ and finally the new Album of this strange band from Slovakia arrives. It comes out on the lovely Strobelight Records label, which is surely a good choice for both, band and label. THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS are really hard to describe, try it with Cyber-Death-Rock, based on rocking guitars and the uncomparable singing of „maryO The deadspacejoker“. This album contains more Death-Rock than the last MCD, which was more produced for the Clubs. Songs like „Everyday Is Halloween“, „Fear, Gunshot...Then The Bliss“, „Death Song“ or „Life In Line“ are upcoming Clubhits at all relevant Death-Rock/Batcave-Parties for sure. I feel a bit remembered on the french band Martyr Whore and a lot of Virgin prunes feeling, meeting late 70s David Bowie sometimes and I guess, this could have been the way, Rozz Williams could sound today, if he hadn´t died untimely in 1998.

The CD only runs about 35 minutes, but contains all good songs and no bad one.

I hope, THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS reach a bigger audience with „Alien Road“, because they are one of the most original bands in the scene these days. (A.P.)

THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS – Guns´n´Drums´n´March´n´Fun (MCD 2003)

(Private Release/ www.batcave.sk  / www.lastdays.host.sk )

I know the slowakian band THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS since the mid 90s, when they „only“ had some demotapes available and I really liked them, because they played a very fresh kind of Gothic-/Death-Rock with hits like „Der Trug“ and others. They´ve also been a very good live band in these days. In 1999 they released the CD „Narrentanz“ which showed further influences than only Gothic and now there is a new MCD available, which features three really different versions of the title track. There are not many Gothic-Rock moments today, but THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS developed a very own Crossover-sound with influences from many many musical styles. Most rememberable is the „Psycho“-voice of singer Poor Mary“0“, combined with rocking Alternative guitars and many electronical sounds. Really an uncomparable mixture and therefore really likeable. I prefer the original version of the track, ´cos it reminds me most of all on the good old Gothic times. The other two versions, especially the long and industrialized „Deadly Fun Mix“ are more dancable and possibly can be heard in some good clubs in europe.

Finally comes the really well done videoclip of „Army Of God“.

I didn´t see THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS on stage for many years, but I am sure they present a great Psycho-show and a powerful sound.

If you think, you could like some kind of Alternative-Gothic-Electro-Crossover, check out THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS´ music and their really good website. (A.P.)

THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS - Narrentanz - Musik Für Die Massen (CD-EP)

(New Christian Music)

I saw THE LAST DAYS OF JESUS as support for Marquee Moon and Forthcoming some years ago in Berlin and Potsdam and got their Demos. Later I received the debut CD from the Alice In... Label and was very impressed by this group from Slovakia. They played a very US-influenced kind of Gothic-Rock, which I did not hear from a European band for a very long time. Unfortunatly I lost the contact after the CD-release and an interview, but happily, I now received their new product and I like it again very much. The band developed to a more Crossover act, away from pure Gothic-Rock. They now use more electronic elements and sometimes some metallic guitars, but all in all it is still the same musikal style as before, only more open-minded.

They also offer two cover versions on this CD, firstly „China Girl“ of David Bowie, which does not  sound like anything, Bowie ever did. If there wouldn´t be the lyrics, you would not notice it as this song. Then we get to hear „Pet Semetary“ by the legendary Ramones, which sounds much better and could become a dancefloor-filler.

Well, if you are an open-minded Gothic listener, try out this fine CD, if not, choose their first album first, you won´t be disappointed. (A.P.)
