JOY DIVISION - The Complete BBC Recordings (CD 2000)

(Strange Fruit/Pinnacle)

Joy DivisionAnother Release of JOY DIVISION, which shows again, how influential this band was in their time. This CD contains all recordings, the band did for the BBC, including both complete Peel Session, two tracks from the "Something Else"-Show and an interview with Ian Curtis and Stephen Morris.

For fans and collectors, this release does not feature any new stuff. One Peel Session has been officially released as 12"EP in 1987, the other one and "Something Else" were available through various Bootlegs. Anyway, the sound quality is better than any Bootleg and it is nice to have this stuff compiled on one CD, so it won´t be a bad choice to have "The Complete BBC Recordings" in the collection. JOY DIVISON - Still (CD)

(CentreDate/Warner)

"Still" was the last album of JOY DIVISION except some Best Of...Compilations and Livematerial and millions of Bootlegs. Well, it is no real album, but a collection of formerly unreleased stuff from all band periods and a live recording of the band´s last ever gig at Birmingham University on May 2nd 1980.

Originally this album was released as Double-LP. The first record contains the studiotracks and a live recording of the Velvet Underground cover "Sister Ray". The studio songs sound very raw, but some are the best, I ever heard from JOY DIVISION like "Ice Age" and "Walked In Line". The live record contains classics like "Transmission", "Shadowplay" and "Isolation", but not "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (which I don´t miss here). The sound is okay and the recording brings over the magic of JOY DIVISON. Anyway, if "Still" was a gift to the real fans or a rip off to earn money with the name of one of the most influencing bands ever, the album is a "you must have" in everyone´s Wave/Gothic collection.

JOY DIVISION - Unknown Pleasures (CD)

(CentreDate/Warner)

Anyone out there, who does not know this first album of JOY DIVISION??? The album opener "Disorder" was the second song of JOY DIVISION, that I ever listened to (after "Love Will Tear Us Apart" of course), and this song tranformed me into a totally devoted fan of this band and especially the voice of Ian Curtis. Most of you will know the unreleased "Warsaw" LP and everyone should know the second album "Closer", "Unknown Pleasures" ist the perfect album, that fills the space inbetween the early punk-influenced power and the very dark and hopeless atmosphere at the end of this band. Well there is a video called "Here are the young men" and you can change the title to "Here are the ANGRY young man" when hearing the sound of "Unknown Pleasures". Beside the great "Disorder", we also find the classics "She´s Lost Control" and "Shadowplay" on the album, but all the other songs like "Day Of The Lords", "New Dawn Fades" or "I Remember Nothing" did influence millions of other bands and made JOY DIVISON one of the most covered bands ever. The band never released any record "you can have", but only "you must have" ones. No excuse, if you don´t know this document of early Post-Punk sound.
