GOTHIC – Grim (DCD 2004)

GOTHIC is an Italian band project, which was founded back in the late 80s and released a lot of tapes through the 90s and now a second CD-(Double)Album in the third millennium.

The project is musically very open minded and works in all the fine arts like music, poetry, painting and video, what comes together to a very own GOTHIC-style.

Well, the main focus of the music is, as one can imagine by the band´s name GOTHIC, the Gothic/Dark Wave genre, but with a lot of influences from Dark Ambient soundscapes and Industrial, from Rock to pure Avantgarde sound.

The atmosphere is mostly very dark and doomy and the complete album seems very conceptual. The first CD contains the more straight sounding tracks, sometimes also dancable. Think of a combination of Virgin Prunes, Sopor Aeternus and Skinny Puppy. CD2 (or „Act II“ as it is named on this release) has more the dark, ambient and avantgardistic pieces. Some of the tracks could become smaller Club Hits, but they would need a better production.

Really, not an easy album, just to consume. It needs some time and concentration to realize the full aspects of this album, but everyone, who gives GOTHIC a chance, will get a great Dark Wave-experience for sure! (A.P.)
