FEAR
OF DOLLS - When The Organ Played At Midnight (Mini-CD 1999)

I
remember a tape by the US-band FEAR OF DOLLS, which was really fine, back in
1995, so I was curious about this self-released debut CD. They actually
developed their style and use more influences than before and so „When The
Organ Played At Midnight“ sounds very interesting. The opener „St. Dymphna“
could be described as Death-Rock between Voo-Doo Church and Antiworld and
should be a hit in the Gothic clubs all around. Then follows a very long
hypnotic track with influences of Eastern Europe folk music. Track 3
„Fragile Toy“ reminds me of a very minimalistic arranged Siouxsie song,
„Show Me The Insides“ could have been a follow up to Christian Death´s
„After The Rain“ with female vocals. „Broken Toy“ is the opposite to
„Fragile Toy“ with backward recording, samples and a very dark atmosphere,
the most experimental track on the CD. Finally we get „Persephone Is
Scratching“, which again has some Siouxsie moments combined with Gitane
DeMone´s music.
So you see, that the music
on this CD is very many-sided, but finally it is American Gothic, which
could be compared to some Neue Ästhetik Multimedia, Middle Pillar or Chtonic
Streams releases. Very good! (A.P.) |
