If
you are only into dancable music, you don´t have to go on reading this
review, but if you love dark, ambient soundscapes, minimalistic electronic
soundtracks and moody atmospheres, you are damn right here. „In The
Air“ is the second album of A MURDER OF ANGELS, a collaboration of Derek
Rush, who is well known for his work as Dream Into Dust and Bryin Dall of
Loretta´s Doll. Both bands are more into „normal“ Gothic sounds with
ambient influences, but A MURDER OF ANGELS is pure Dark-Ambient music or,
as the creators call it themselves, „Damnbient“. There is no happiness
in this music, no moment of fun or laughing, but really dark, but mostly
not negative, sounds, that should best be listened to in candlelight. It
is not easy, to compare it to any known bands or projects, ´cos A MURDER
OF ANGELS have their very own atmosphere and it would be not fair to say,
that they sound like anyone else. But it is sure, that they fit perfectly
into the program of Middle Pillar. If you really need any comparisons,
maybe listen to the very first Coil record „How To Destroy Angels“
(recognised the „Angels“ in both names?). Less known comparable names
are Amor Vati/Vandal X or maybe Rozz Williams´ Premature Ejaculations in
some moments. Playing this album and closing your eyes, for sure, you will
see films from your inner self. Take the peace to explore all the sounds
and samples on this work. Finally the artwork of the album is really
great, not as dark, as one could think after listening to the music, but
strangely perfect for it. If you are into neoclassical sounds, Dark
Ambient and things like these, try out „In The Air“. (A.P.)
A MURDER OF ANGELS - While You Sleep (CD)(Middle Pillar, P.O.Box 555, New York NY 10009, USA,

A MURDER OF ANGELS is the third release on the
Middle Pillar label and it is again a very good one.
This project is a collaboration of Derek Rush
(December, Dream Into Dust...) and Bryin Jones (Loretta´s Doll, 4th Sign of the
Apocalypse...) and they call their music "damnbient", which describes this album
very good. The atmosphere is very dark and morbid with a certain soundtrack feeling
(imagine a film composed of the best moments of "Don´t look now" and
"Decoder" or so). The CD has, as all Middle Pillar releases, a really fine
artwork and so there is no reason, not to get this release, if you like dark-ambient
music. Beside Chthonic Stremas, Middle Pillar is the best label for such style of music
from the USA. (A.P.) |
