LUDMILA – Passages From >Stella Splendens</PreLud(e)mila (2x MCD 2004)
I received some pieces of their music, of which I don´t really know, if it is „only“ Promo stuff, or if you can buy it in this form. „Passages From >Stella Splendens<“ opens with a short „Ave Maria“, sung by Paola Bianchi, followed by „Ave Gloriosa Mater Salvatoris“, a medieval sacral chant, which shows the beautiness of Bianchi´s voice. „Lova“ is orientated on more common structures and creates a really enjoyable atmosphere with some Dead Can Dance influences. The second CD-R „Lude(e)mila“ opens with „Volo Grigio“, a slow, bass-dominated track somewhere between 4AD-Pop and Trip Hop. The voice of singer Paola Bianchi ist somwhere between Elisabeth Fraser (of the Cocteau Twins) and Dolores O´Riordan (of the Cranberries). Finally the song „explodes“ in a wall of sound. „Trasporto“ is in the same style, but a bit more straight. This is the most conventional song, I heard of the band yet and it is really good after listening to it a couple of times. This CD ends with „Sabbia Suadente“, less spectacular, than the previous songs. It is hard to put LUDMILA into one style, ´cos the influences come from such different musical points like Gregorian Chant and Trip Hop, from Dark-Wave and Alternative Rock and much more. Strange band, but really good and original. I guess, it would be an interesting experience, if the band would find a way to combine their different influences. (A.P.) LUDMILA – Demo-CD (CD 2000)
