DREAM INTO DUST – The Lathe Of Heaven (CD 2003)

(Chthonic Streams/Middle Pillar-Stateart www.dreamintodust.com )

I feel, that I know the project DREAM INTO DUST for centuries, but when I took a look into the bandinfo, I realized, that „The Lathe Of Heaven“ is only the second full-length album beside various singles and EPs. Maybe that comes from my very close love for the music of Derek Rush, who was also in the project December and the band Loretta´s Doll. Together with Bryin Dall (A Murder Of Angels (with Derek Rush, too), Thee Majesty) and Eddy Malave, Derek has recorded a wonderful album, full of tracks between Apocalyptic Folk, Industrial and Underground-Pop. Often, the songs remind me on other bands, but the musiciancs have added a very own atmosphere and sound. „Disconnected“ for example could´ve been a mid 80s Depeche Mode b-side, which has been „destroyed“ by many sound effects, but still has a certain „Pop“-feeling. „How The Roses Burned“ could be a more rough Cure song of their mid-90s period. I don´t want to say, that DREAM INTO DUST are simply a copy of these band, but they take certain atmospheres of them and develop it  into a very special DREAM INTO DUST sound. I really like that!

The band uses influences from any musical style of the last decades, from New Wave and Psychedelic to Folk, Industrial and a few pop-tunes, but it is never too dark, but only melancholic and beautiful. So it is no wonder, that the album is distributed by Middle Pillar in the USA, as they are well-known for such special music.

As bands like Coil and/or Psychic TV, DREAM INTO DUST have created a very own kind of music by using every possible influence. Possibly „The Lathe Of Heaven“ could someday become a new „Dreams Less Sweet“?

For any fan of the work of Ursula K.LeGuin´s stories and novels it could be interesting, that „The Lathe Of Heaven“ took some inspiration from her works, but should not be seen as a soundtrack to it.

Anyway...everybody who liked the former works of DREAM INTO DUST will like this new album, too, even, if it sounds a bit different, but still keeps the atmosphere. Anybody else, who is interested in experimental and very own sounds, should check out this CD, too. (A.P.)

DREAM INTO DUST – Salvation´s Corridor (7“ 2002)

(Athanor/Ars Regia www.arsregia.org www.chthonicstreams.com )

I know Derek Rush´s project DREAM INTO DUST for a couple of years now, as I do know his other projects like Loretta´s Doll and December and I really liked all their stuff. Unfortunatly there has not been a complete DREAM INTO DUST release for some years, so I was really happy to get this wonderful and exclusive Picture-7“ on the French Athanor lable. And believe me, it is one of the most beautiful vinyl releases, that I received for a long time. The record is made of heavy vinyl and has great pictures on both sides. There are no other infos, than the band´s name, the song titles and the catalogue number/Web-address of Athanor, but what else do you need?

The record contains two exclusive tracks, which are both really good. It seems that there are certain influences of early Coil, combined with neo-classical and very few Folk elements. Sometimes I feel remembered on the early works of Germany´s finest 90s Dark Wave band Lore Of Asmoday. It would be a great experience, if both bands would collaborate some day, I think...this would become a masterpiece for sure!

Until this dream could possibly become true some time in the future, this Picture-7“ is a „must-have“ for every fan of experimental Neo-Classic-sounds, but hurry up, ´cos this release is limited to only 333 copies! (A.P.)
