CHIRLEISON – A Whisper (CD 2004)

(The Fossil Dungeon/Dark Vinyl)

CHIRLEISON are an „emotional Neo Folk band“ (as the info-sheet says) from the Island of Sardinia/Italy. They found their musical home for the first CD-release on The Fossil Dungeon-label in the US of A and, believe me, this was the right decision. Again our friends in America prove their feeling for great, touching music.

CHIRLEISON play some kind of acoustic Neo Folk-music with a lot of medieval influences and even some East European moments, like in the titel track „A Whisper“. One of my favourite tracks on this album is „Rosary“, a very melancholic song, that reminds me on some 4 AD-releases from the mid 80s. I am sure, this track (and some others, too) will touch many open-minded fans of Dead Can Dance. On the other side, CHIRLEISON have also very ambient tracks like „Strings“ with a lot of natural sounds and (surpise surprise!) string arrangements. A great mixture with wonderful female vocals and, as always on The Fossil Dungeon, great cover artwork.

If you are into a combination of 80s-4AD-sound, Ataraxia, Heavenly Voices and medieval Neo Folk-music, CHRILEISON will satisfy you for sure. Simply beautiful. (A.P.)
