AENIMA are one of the most popular Gothic-bands from Portugal and now they have their new album out on the US-Middle Pillar label. Definetly, this lable is the right one for AENIMA, who play a very own, aetherial guitar sound.

Members of AENIMA have been in other well known portuguese bands like Poetry Of Shadows or Millennium and with singer Carmen, they have one of the most likeable female voices these days (and she´s really beautiful, too). The music of AENIMA sounds like, if they took the best elements of the Cocteau Twins („Blue Bell Knoll“/“Heaven Or Las Vegas“ period), Ataraxia and Mors Syphilitica or let me say: athmospheric Guitar-Wave with some Neo-Classical moments and wonderful vocals. Even, if the music has a dark feeling, it is neither morbid, nor depressive, but very melancholic. I like to listen to this CD on calm evenings at home, but I am sure, that AENIMA are a very good live band, too, as they have some more rocky moments in their music. To complete the perfect impression of this album, the artwork is (as always on Middle pillar releases) simply beautiful.

If I had to describe the music of AENIMA in only two words, I would say: melancholic harmony! (A.P.)

AENIMA präsentiert nach “Revolutions” ihr zweites Album. Die Band hat sich im Jahre 1997 in Portugal zusammengefunden und man hat versucht, sofort einen eigenen Gang zu bekommen. Man nahm ein Demo mit vier Stücken aus und konnte damit sofort einen Vertrag über zwei Alben ergattern. 1999 dann erschien oben genanntes Album und herausgekommen ist ein ziemlich reifes, sehr atmosphärisches Werk, welches jede Menge guter Kritiken ergattern konnte. Ebenso wurde eines der Stücke auf einen Sampler des amerikanischen Labels Cleopatra verwendet, was der Band noch ein gutes Stück weiter nach vorne brachte. Trotzdem liess man sich Zeit mit dem neuen Album, welches nun vorliegt. Mehr als 30 Stücke hat man aufgenommen, doch nur sechs Stück haben es auf dieses ca. 30-minütige CD geschafft. Sie ist weniger astral geworden, als das Debutwerk, doch trotzdem immer noch sehr düster und wavig. Erinnern definitiv an die guten Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance oder auch This Mortal Coil. Getragen wird die Musik natürlich ganz klar durch die soprane Stimme von Carmen. Dazu gibt es filigrane Gitarren und ein mittelalterlich-klassisches Songwriting. Anspieltips dieser CD sind übrigens „The Light“ und das, für AENIMA-Verhältnisse härtere Stück „At The Edge Of A Cliff“. (H.H.)
